Behind the 3 Foot Noodle Experiment

I bought one of the 3 feet please jerseys a few years back. While it did seem to have a small effect and I still wear it when I ride on the road, I noticed that most people took no notice of it. I was a little crushed. I was still being passed uncomfortably close or dangerously close about half ot the time and especially in areas and at times where it was not safe for the car to pass. This year I had an idea. Today I put it into action. I took a bright orange swimming noodle and made a mark at each foot of the 3 feet…

Day Old No Poo With a Side of Raining Cats and Dogs

This is for all you No Poo fans out there. Day Old No Poo is when I wash my hair and sleep on it, then get it wet again in the morning to reset the curls. This works great because my curls, which are never that frizzy, are even less frizzy after a reset. This morning, I got up, wet my hair and got ready for work. It proceeded to rain cats and dogs for the better part of the day. I was going to take a picture when I got home but I got distracted making gluten-free crackers. By the time I remembered I was going to take picture…

    Vegetarians Pump Iron

This is the picture of pretty darn healthy. When people first learn that I am a gluten intolerant pseudo vegetarian they instantaneously and incredulously ask “What do you eat?” As if I were about to starve to death. Anyone looking at me can see that’s not true. I eat vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains (quinoa, rice, corn), eggs, dairy and occasionally fish (frequency of which is in that order). Then they state as if it is a matter-of-fact “You probably have an iron deficiency.” That is actually highly unlikely.I eat many things that are high in iron, some of them on a routine/daily basis. I used to give blood and upon learning I was vegetarian they…

    Seize the Frozen Day

Listening the tires crunch through slushy puddles I was thinking, it’s not to cold to ride to work. It wasn’t. Not even the 23 mph head wind and the 20 degree wind chill could stop me. Sure it took half an hour, but I made it and my face wasn’t frozen. My hands arrived nice and toasty in my home-made pogies. The most unfortunate thing about the ride was that when I got to work the hot water on the water cooler wasn’t functioning properly. Luke warm tea. It’s supposed to snow the rest of the week, so I had to take a chance. Totally worth it, and models predict…

No Poo in the Hotel Pool

Chlorine. I figured it was the ultimate test of No Poo. Plus we were staying at a hotel with a big heated pool and we wanted to swim. Once we were good and pruned, and a herd of unruly children showed up, it was time to get out. Back to the room for a shower before cheering the other cape cod on during their next game. I pulled out my travel No Poo. My hair was feeling like straw. I used very little baking soda because I could feel that my hair was stripped, so I went straight for the vinegar rinse. Immediately my hair felt softer. After a good…

Ode to No Poo: 22 days

After No Poo, before riding to work. After work commute in the fog and rain. This morning I showered and No Poo’d before work. I rode my bicycle despite the insane humidity/fog and predicted rain. I have to ride, it’s my therapy. Here, as a testament to No Poo, a before and after picture. Sorry for the poor lighting. The first picture is post No Poo pre ride to work. The rest are after riding home in the rain in my bicycle helmet. Overall, I am very pleased. While still slightly frizzy, less frizzy than when I was using shampoo and TONS more curl. Also, I did not smell like…

    Feed Your Bugs!

I’m not talking about the pet spider I keep in the bathroom to control the lady bug invasion. I am talking about the bacteria colonizing your gut. Say hello to your little friends! This is on my mind, you see, because I have run out of my favorite fat-free organic yogurt and since I live in town where livestock is prohibited, I need to get to the store. You may have seen those expensive probiotics they sell at your local convenience store. I get a good look at them every time I am waiting in line at the pharmacy. This type of supplement may be a better option for those…

    Daily Detox

I spent the last two weeks performing a light detox. Whenever I get a water at the curling club instead of my usual hard cider, I get that look. The look that says, but why would you want water when you could have a drink? The answer of course is that I feel so much healthier when I am practicing a little daily detox.Detoxification is an important ritual for healthy living in the modern world. Our bodies collect dirt on the outside which is obvious and the reason most people bathe regularly. We also collect things on the inside. Most people are not paying much attention to this hidden funk.…

Testing My New Deodorant on a Frosty Morning Ride

Ah! Another refreshing spring ride past the frosty seashore to work! I adjusted my pogies with some large safety pins, which increased their toastiness and arrived with warm hands. A nippie wind was coming from the west, and I was headed SouthWest, so a little slow going, but a great morning workout….AND I was wearing my new deodorant which works marvelously! Mind you, this is a deodorant and not an anti-perspirant, though it does absorb some moisture. I arrived this morning smelling of patchouli with a rosie glow in my cheeks, just the way I like it. I consider my deodorant experiment a success! I did try out the lotion…
